SESSIONS

Friday 28 July: Sewing
We learn about sewing, fashion, sustainability, how to use a needle and thread and do a basic machine stitch. We make a produce bag and other items.

Friday 4 August: Baking
We talk about recipes and baking, make some muffins and measure and prepare a cookie in a jar recipe.

Friday 11 August: Fermentation
We investigate fermented food preservation and learn how you can do it yourself, followed by making sauerkraut.

Friday 18 August: Pickles
We learn about pickling, its history and all about prebiotic and probiotic food. We make pickled beetroot and cucumber.

Friday 25 August: Dehydrating Foods
We find out about the process of dehydrating foods by making our own dried banana and apple and chocolate coated dried apricots.

Friday 1 September: Jams and Jellies
We examine the process of making jams and jellies and find out which foods can be preserved by this method. We also make our own jam and piklets with cream to eat it with.

Friday 8 September: Homemade Household Cleaning
We talk about the benefits of making our own products without chemicals and make a lavender and rosemary household cleaner as well as dishwasher tablets.

Wednesday 13 September: Homemade Health and Beauty
We investigate cosmetics, their ingredients, the impact on our bodies and the environment and make a DIY coffee body scrub, skin salve and toothpaste.

This Term our focus will be on learning skills to last a lifetime. We will learn and discover the benefits of homesteading. Children we will learn skills such as sewing, food preparation and many DIY projects to be self-sufficient. We will have discussions about the importance of learning and using such skills. Our hope is for children to find the joy and satisfaction of making things themselves, to continue to make things at home and pass on skills to others. We will look into the environmental benefits of fixing things, growing, harvesting and preparing things in our own home.

Throughout the term children will also learn about various sustainable farming methods such as regenerative farming, natural pest management, raising healthy and happy animals. As always there will be ongoing discussions and hands on learning that encompasses; planting with the seasons, companion planting and how to build and maintain healthy soil. Children will be encouraged to get into our garden plot regularly to get their hands dirty. They will be responsible for planting, caring for, maintaining and harvesting from our garden.

Where to meet

We will meet at the Farm House opposite the restaurant. Please look out for the signs to guide you.

Ages

These workshops are appropriate for children who are interested in farming, energetic and willing to work. Ages 5 to 12 years.

Extra Service

If you are a working parent please discuss with the Farm Kids Manager if you need your child to start early or finish later than the designated program time so as to get to and from work. For an extra fee this can be arranged.
