A cross-cutting advocacy priority for VCOSS members is improving the quality and affordability of rental housing – including energy performance. We know that energy efficient homes are better for people’s health and wellbeing, their wallets, and the planet. They’re more comfortable to live in, cost less to heat and cool, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This online VCOSS member briefing and policy consultation will provide an opportunity for us to collectively advocate for the introduction of strong minimum standards on energy efficiency in rental housing. This session will ultimately feed into VCOSS' written submission to the Victorian Government’s Gas Substitution Roadmap Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) process.

This briefing and policy consultation is for anyone working at a VCOSS member organisation, who has:

An interest in housing quality, housing affordability/cost-of-living/energy hardship, energy/health, renters’ rights, climate adaptation, community resilience or related topics, and

Insights to share that will help VCOSS make a strong case for the introduction of robust minimum standards on energy efficiency in rental housing.

For example, we are keen to hear about things like (but not limited to): your organisation’s insights about the current state of rental housing (from an energy efficiency perspective), the impacts of poor energy performance (e.g. ‘leaky houses’) on renters, and – importantly for the RIS submission – your views on how renters would benefit from strong minimum standards on energy efficiency, ideas of what you’d like to see in new minimum standards, and how and when you think the reform should be fairly implemented. We’ll have some discussion prompts that we’ll circulate ahead of time, to assist us to have the conversation together.
