Minister of Finance dissects his 2023 Budget

He has been quoted as saying, “Budget 2023 will focus on what matters most to New Zealanders, with the cost of living a top priority.” The budget will be delivered on Thursday 18 May, in the shadow of Cyclone Gabrielle and in a challenging fiscal environment.

The Government wants to keep the economy moving so they can continue to invest in creating a high wage, low emissions economy that will deliver for New Zealanders in good times and bad. Is this possible and what needs to be done with the tax system for a fairer platform for households and business?

Start thinking about your questions now for Minister Robertson as he will take questions at the end of his address. This Breakfast will be held in the Southward Theatre as it is likely to draw a large crowd.

About the Speaker: Hon Grant Robertson
Minister of Finance, Sport and Recreation and Cyclone Recovery, and Leader of the House

Grant was born in Palmerston North and lived in Hastings before his family settled in Dunedin. He studied politics at Ōtago, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 1995. He was the President of Ōtago University Students’ Association and became Co-President of the New Zealand University Students Association.

Grant joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1997 where he managed the New Zealand Overseas Aid Programme to Samoa. He was then posted to the United Nations in New York, working on global environment and development issues.

On his return to New Zealand, Grant became an advisor to former Prime Minister Helen Clark before taking on a business development role with the University of Ōtago. Grant’s belief in social justice and a desire to see every New Zealander achieve their potential led him to politics. He has been the Member of Parliament for Wellington Central since November 2008.

He met his partner Alf in 1998 playing rugby and their family now includes four grandchildren. In 2009 they were joined in a civil union.
