Beyond the Sidelines: Bringing Mission back to the centre

Mission still matters—but in many churches, it no longer shapes the whole community.

Fewer people are being sent. Even fewer are considering it.

So what has changed?

This workshop explores why mission has drifted to the edges, and what it looks like to lead it back toward the centre—without pressure, and without falling into outdated models.

You’ll leave with clarity for your context and a simple step to begin.

Space for leaders to reflect on how they help people to serve, both where they are, and to actively discern where God might be inviting them beyond what is familiar or convenient.

What is mission??

I work with a broad understanding of mission as participation in the mission of God—so it includes the whole life of the church, not just a specific programme or group. At the same time, I want to be intentional about not losing the sending dimension of mission.

When mission becomes ‘everything’ we do as church, it can unintentionally become ‘nothing in particular’, and the call to ‘go’, to cross cultures, and to be sent beyond our own context, can quietly fade. The aim is to hold both together:

· mission as the calling of the whole church, and

· sending as a vital expression of that calling.

Kim Shaw works as a professional coach with church leaders to help them discern how to lead mission in a way that is theologically grounded, contextually wise, and owned by the whole community.
