Miya Miya Film Club and PORT el MINA Present: Caramel
Event description
Miya Miya translates in Arabic to the 100 emoji, perfect, fantastic, 100/100. Miya Miya Film Club aims to showcase and provide a platform to tell SWANA stories on unceded Gadigal and Wangal land.
After the success of our launch event Gadigal to Gaza we're excited to bring you a monthly event. Miya Miya Film Club Presents will be a place where you can have an ahweh (Lebanese coffee) or tea, play some tawla (backgammon), socialise with your community, and watch a film together from the SWANA region.
The sixth feature film in our 2025 program is: سكر بنات (Caramel, Lebanon, 2007) directed by Nadine Labaki.
Caramel is brought to you in collaboration with PORT el MINA. @portelmina, led by multidisciplinary artist Haini Chahrouk, is a fashion label that artfully fuses Lebanese heritage and Middle Eastern elements with the vibrant culture of Western Sydney. Drawing from his experience designing for high-end men's streetwear brands, Haini fully controls the creative and production process at PORT el MINA, ensuring every piece is a timeless statement—crafted with authenticity, impeccable detail, and a bold cross-cultural narrative. Each piece is made in-house at the label’s studio in Marrickville. A PORT el MINA scarf specifically made for the Sydney winters will be available for purchase with your ticket and on the day with 50% of the proceeds going to Hearts for Gaza.
Showing before Caramel, will be the world premiere of the short film collaboration from PORT el MINA and rising Palestinian director Bilal Laila: City of Waves and Horizon. A poetic love letter to Mina, Lebanon.
Caramel, follows five women who frequent a beauty salon in Beirut. The beauty salon becomes a haven where the women share laughter, secrets, and heartbreak, The film is a tender tale where love, tradition, and rebellion melt together like sugar on the stove.
