This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Contextual Bible Study, which is a form of community-based Bible re-reading practice, has worked with Matthew’s Gospel in South Africa for more than 30 years. This lecture explores how Matthew has been used to engage with community-led concerns, including African culture, women’s leadership, HIV, masculinity, male sexual violence against men, race, land and food security, unemployment, and unjust economic structures. Matthew’s Gospel offers resources both through Matthew’s own particular theological orientation and through the sources that Matthew has re-used.

Gerald West, Professor Emeritus, Old Testament/Hebrew Bible and African Biblical Hermeneutics in the School of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Fellow, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
