Event description

Winds of Change

The EU, Climate Change and the Green Transition

For over three decades, the EU has sought to reduce its carbon footprint and is now committed to a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, aspiring to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

Yet, despite being a self-proclaimed world leader in environmental policy, in 2021 just 21.8% of EU energy was renewable. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has also brought the EU’s current reliance on non-renewable energy sources to the fore. Under the EU’s Green Agenda policy framework, the Union’s 27 Member States have agreed to a REPowerEU plan which is based on three pillars: (I) saving energy; (II) producing clean energy; and (III) diversifying the EU’s energy supplies.

For the 2023 Christchurch Model EU, students will be assigned an EU Member State to represent in a mock Council of the European Union session, debating issues surrounding the EU’s Green Agenda, and ultimately voting on a final agreement.

This collaborative and engaging two day Council is open to all high school students Years 9 to 13, with no previous experience or EU knowledge required. Students will be supported by University lecturers and trained assistants throughout the event.

Concurrently with the student event, a Professional Development workshop will be convened for teachers, facilitated by Dr Maria Perreau of the Aotearoa Social Studies Educators’ Network (ASSEN). The workshop will explore ways in which the European Union may be used as a context for teaching and learning in the social studies curriculum.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!
