Event description

There will be 4 musical acts; 2 local, 2 from Timor-Leste community, with panel discussions and refreshments in between.
Come along for a night of amazing music and learn about the struggles of Australia's second closest neighbour and the second newest country in the world!
U18s are FREE!

It is now over 20 twenty years since Timor Leste gained its independence out of the ashes of post
referendum destruction by Indonesian-backed militia.
In Vemasse we have seen community members grow in confidence and skills to identify their needs
and work towards achieving the aims to address those needs.
We have seen social capital strengthened with the formation of the Scouts group at Vemasse Senior
High School (male and female members), the strengthening of the local credit and savings co-
operative to lobby the municipal department of education to approve the creation of a preschool in
the suku of Uaigae, and also to set up a working group to identify and support people with a
disability in the Vemasse sub-district. Then there is the example an individual teacher from the
Vemasse Senior High School playing a key role in the setting up of a local NGO called ADFTL
Asosiasaun Defisiensia Fiar Timor Leste– to work across the four eastern municipalities raising
awareness of the rights of people with a physical disability.
Monash Friends of Vemasse as a friend can support local endeavours by providing encouragement
and some resources. Over the years we have found that a little support goes a long way in building
confidence to achieve what they set out to do.:

The funds will go towards:
 Supporting the Vemasse Sports Association organize a round of football matches to engage
young men
 Fund provision of local furniture for the new preschool that is being built at this very
moment in Uaigae
 Provision of toys, equipment and stationery for the running of the kindergarten
 Assist with funds to support families of a disabled person attend the Centre for National
Rehabilitation (CRN) for fitting of aids and rehabilitation.
 Provide a small perdiem to volunteer teachers at the senior high school.
 Collect and ship disability aids according to need for Vemasse and Asosiasaun Defisiensia
Fiar Timor Leste

Doors open from 7pm for 7:30 start.

Come along with your neighbours to support Monash Friends of Vemasse and their work partnering with the Vemasse community in Timor-Leste!

Friendship groups are small community grassroots organisations linking local councils in Australia with counterparts in Timor-Leste. The Monash Council has been partnered with the sub-district of Vemasse since 2006, and we're looking for the next generation to continue the partnership.
