Monash University Translator and Interpreter Training Package

Monash University, through the Translation and Interpreting Studies program, has received funding from the Greater Shepparton City Council to create a regional training package for non-professional translators, interpreters, and bilingual workers in the Shepparton area.

This four-day training course, which will take place in May and June, will be available to anyone in the local community interested in translation and interpretation and exploring pathways to a professional career in these fields. We invite you to participate in a series of comprehensive skill-building sessions designed to enhance the abilities of non-professional interpreters and translators in Shepparton, Victoria. 

The training program will be hosted at the University of Melbourne Shepparton Campus and will feature esteemed presenters from Monash University as well as industry experts. On the final day of the course, an expo event will provide trainees the opportunity to interact with industry stakeholders, universities, and local organizations, facilitating information sharing and the development of regional networks.

Schedule

Skill-building Session 1: Interpreting Practice

• Date: Saturday, 17 May
• Time: 12.45-4.30 pm (Afternoon tea included)
• Modules:
  • Preparing to Interpret with Chao Wang
    • Learn the differences between the four main modes of interpreting and practice dialogue and consecutive interpreting in common community settings.
  • Building Glossaries with Chao Wang
    • Discover how to use and build glossaries for various specialisations, aiding both learning and job preparation.

Skill-building Session 2: Translation Practice

• Date: Saturday, 31 May
• Time: 12.45-4.30 pm (Afternoon tea included)
• Modules:
  • Understanding Translation and Interpreting with Dr Leah Gerber
    • Grasp the key differences between translators and interpreters.
  • Preparing to Translate with Dr Shani Tobias
    • Learn basic translation approaches and how to tailor texts for different audiences.
  • Translation Types with Dr Shani Tobias
    • Identify key translation types and develop strategies for producing quality translations, including legal and medical documents.

Session for Service Providers

• Date: Friday, 13 June
• Time: 11.30 a.m.-1.30 pm
• Module: Working with Interpreters (Presenter TBC)
  • Understand the role of translators and interpreters, the importance of NAATI certification, and ethical considerations through role play and scenario-based learning.

Building Regional Resilience: Translation and Interpreting Practice and Expo

• Date: Saturday, 14 June
• Time: 12.45-4.30 pm
• Modules:
  • Translating and Interpreting in Natural Disasters with Dr Leah Gerber and Rachel Taylor
    • Equip yourself with the skills to interpret natural disaster scenarios and adapt culturally specific information for effective communication.
  • Industry Expo
    • Network with key industry stakeholders, including Monash University, Language Service Providers, NAATI, and AUSIT among others.
