The Life of Pi

Discovering the story, geometry and wonder behind one of mathematics’ most remarkable numbers

Meet your presenter

Chris Willemsen

Isn’t Pi a very special number?

Who discovered this remarkable number? Where did Pi come to life? Who has thought about it, studied it and helped shape our understanding of it? Most importantly, how can we inspire children to explore Pi for themselves—and which child might become a true Pi-oneer?

In this session, participants will explore the origins and story of the number Pi and become acquainted with a completely new material designed to help children prove and reason the value of Pi.

This engaging resource is suited to children in upper primary and secondary education. It can also be beautifully combined with familiar Montessori resources, including the geometric cabinet.

Like many Montessori mathematics and geometry materials, it makes an abstract mathematical relationship visible, tangible and open to discovery—creating that delightful Montessori “aha” experience.

The Origins of Pi

Explore where Pi came from, how people across history have studied it and why it remains one of mathematics’ most intriguing constants.

Reasoning Through Material

Discover a new hands-on material that helps children investigate, reason and demonstrate the mathematical relationship represented by Pi.

From Concrete to Abstract

See how a concrete geometric experience can help upper-primary and secondary students move towards increasingly abstract mathematical understanding.

Connecting Montessori Materials

Consider how the new Pi material can be combined with established Montessori resources, including the geometric cabinet, to enrich mathematical discovery.

Bring Pi to life through a hands-on experience that invites children to explore, reason, discover and become mathematical Pi-oneers.
