It starts with four words. "Got a minute to talk?"

Your office door closes and your best performer sits down, not sure where to begin. When it finally comes out, the story is familiar. The workload has been relentless, they have barely slept in weeks, they tried to keep up and then tried to keep quiet, and now they are sitting in front of you because there is nothing left.

Or maybe your version sounds different. "You are breaching my rights, I'm taking this further." Maybe it arrives as an email from a lawyer you have never met, or a claim lodged by someone who used to sit on your team.

In that moment, nobody reaches for the policy. The policy is a document. The moment is a human being looking at you, waiting to see what kind of leader you are.

What do you actually do?

Most managers have never been taught how to handle this conversation, so they improvise. They listen, they say "let's look at options," and once the person has left they quietly search the internet for what they should have said. But improvising is risky. From the moment you know someone is struggling, the clock is running, and if it later becomes a workers compensation claim, a complaint to the safety regulator, or a resignation followed by a lawyer's letter, the first question you will ask yourself is simple: what should I do?

This lunch is for what happens next

Hosted by WonderLab founder Rachel WingMan, this monthly networking lunch is built for leaders who have the policies and are still not sure what to do when a real person brings them a real problem. Over lunch you will:

  • Run through a live WonderShift scenario where a team member tells you they are struggling, and practise what you say in the next sixty seconds, in the room rather than in real life
  • Learn to spot the early signs before the person who is drowning tells you, and the follow-up that stops a problem becoming a claim
  • See what the rules actually expect of you, translated into what you say and do on Monday
  • Swap notes with HR, WHS and business managers who have sat in that same chair
  • Walk out with conversation scripts, escalation paths and work design changes you can use the next day

Come as you are

Most people walk in alone, and that is completely normal. This is a friendly networking lunch, not an MLM recruiting event, and first-timers are always welcome. You will be seated with a table of peers and there is always a WonderLab host in the room to introduce you around.

To keep it that way, a few ground rules. This is a professional event, not a pickup or dating event. Harassment, unwanted attention, or any pressure to pitch MLM, crypto or religious recruitment will get you removed immediately, and the organisers reserve the right to refuse entry or ask anyone to leave at any time.

Bring your hardest conversation from the last year. Leave with a way to handle the next one.
