Mid-Autumn 2023: The Mooncake Workshop with A Seasonal Taste

This event has passed Get Tickets

Event description

We are excited to collaborate with Slow Food DC this time to make the traditional mooncakes in Chinese culture.

Come create traditional Cantonese mooncakes or snow skin gluten-free mooncakes with us.

History:
Since the Han Dynasty (202 BCE - 220 BCE), Chinese people have made offerings to the moon to honor the end of the autumn harvest. The completion of the moon’s cycle is observed as a representation of union in a metaphorical reunion. Traditionally, families and friends gather to ‘worship’ the moon with the creation of moon-related riddles and lanterns accompanied by tea, osmanthus wine, and mooncakes. As the primary provider of mooncakes in the DC metro area, we are excited to teach and prepare this culturally significant pastry with you.

In this workshop, we will be preparing many mooncakes in all – traditional wheat dough mooncakes and gluten-free mooncakes filled with the classic lotus seeds paste, red bean paste and a seasonal sweet pumpkin paste. Additionally, we will also challenge this new recipe, which does not include any oil or sugar in the cake dough. We will be baking some of the products during the class. You will be bringing the rest with you to bake at home.

All are welcome to gather with us to enjoy this important delicacy in Chinese culture.
