Event description

More-than-human placemaking in multispecies cities: politics, praxes and possibilities

Presented by Professor Donna Houston

School of Communication, Society and Culture, Macquarie University

Time: 10:00am – 11:00am, Friday 24 October 2025

Location: Room 418.208

Around the world, cities are embracing urban greening and regenerative placemaking in response to climate and ecological challenges. Alongside this shift, researchers and practitioners are exploring how cities can be designed and imagined not just for humans, but with and for multiple species.

In this talk, Professor Donna Houston will explore the emerging field of more-than-human, multispecies urbanism, asking critical questions about how we think about place, justice, and interdependence in the city. Drawing on recent collaborative projects – including The Power of Public Spaces, Imagining Extinction, and Surfacing Urban Wetlands – she will reflect on the politics, praxes, and possibilities of reimagining urban life through multispecies and ecological lenses.

Rather than offering fixed answers, this session invites dialogue around how we might engage ethically and creatively with place in the face of ecological uncertainty.
