Morning Star Yidaki Healing - Larry Gurruwiwi and Malawurr 12th May

We invite you to join us for - Morning Star Yidaki Sharing and Healing with Larry Gurruwiwi and Malawurr (family). 

The performers/healers will be in Darwin to record music with Skinnyfish. This is a fundraiser to help them with travel costs and the Morning Star documentary project.

This extraordinary event has been planned because Larry and his family have undertaken the quest to share the power of the sacred Yolŋu sounds of the Yidaki (dijiridu) to heal people around the world. Larry and his brothers are following in their father's footsteps taking on the custodianship of the Yidaki songline. Meanwhile they have spent years working on a passion project to make a film about the Banumbirr - Morning Star - songline. They want to share this with you. 

This is the only the second event of its kind in Darwin. The first was at Songlines in October 2023 and was fantastic!

NB: Bookings essential. Healings will be available to everyone who attends. At least two healers will be present and we have spaces in Songlines to accommodate this. 

About Yidaki Healings

Alongside playing music around Australia and the world Larry, his father and family have been delivering yidaki healings as their contribution to world/human healing and intercultural knowledge transfer. Larry's father toured Europe with Ben Strunin (film producer/director) in 2009 to perform and also delivered healings.

Larry and Vernon, his brother, are committed to sharing their knowledge and skills. In 2019 they travelled to five countries (England, Wales, France, Switzerland and Czech Republic), pre-COVID. They have played at numerous Festivals and boutique events including Rêve de l’Aborigène (France), WOMAD in Bristol (United Kingdom) and Fondation Opale (Switzerland). 

During the 2019 trip Larry Gurruwiwi and Maluwurr worked at Hammersmith Hospital in London with cardiovascular patients (as documented in the proof of concept in the film) and the positive health impacts were monitored by doctors. The footage is amazing!

About the film Morning Star

Old man said to his sons and family: 'I want you to rise and shine like the Morning Star and show balanda around the world'. 

Morning Star is the sequel to the documentary Westwind - Djalu's Legacy (2017). Old man (dec) and Larry (his son) conceived the idea for this film in 2011 whilst making Westwind. The day after Westwind premiered in Melbourne they announced to Ben that this was to be their next project.

Banumbirr (aka Morning Star) is a songline about Venus, brought the first humans to Arnhem Land - the Djan'kawu sisters. This is one of the highly significant creation stores of North East Arnhem land. During the event we will share with you the story of how the film was conceived and directed by Yolŋu and its progress to date.

Proceeds from the event will support the team's travel costs and the making of the Documentary Morning Star.
