THE CHEF:
Svetlana Jarkova's story:
"A talented Belarusian migrant facing common migrant challenges upon her arrival in Adelaide over two decades ago. Balancing family commitments with university studies and the dogged determination to master the English language. It just happened so that all family birthdays including her husband's, son's and daughter's, coincided with university exams. So the family decided that birthday cakes will have to wait until Mum graduates. And she promised them that she will not miss another birthday after graduation and will bake a lavish birthday cake for each occasion. Fast forward to 2024 and she has kept her promise wiith every member of her family receiving a piece-of-art birthday cake over the past 22 years. She also added a creative strike 10 years ago when she got into decorating her baking creations with art. The children have been quick to spot a business opportunity for Mum, came up with a catchy business name - Svetkacakes - and created an Instagram page for it. So you're welcome to check her out on Instagram - the cakes are stunningly beautiful!" Svetlana is excited to share the joys of Belarusian cooking with the South Australian community and invites you to join us!

THE DISHES:
Join us for a cooking class featuring Draniki, the beloved Belarusian potato pancake! Deeply rooted in Belarus’ nation-wide appreciation for potatoes, it is a Slavic version of crispy, savory pancakes best enjoyed with a dollop of sour cream on top. Belarusians are known as the experts in growing and cooking potatoes so knowing and loving how to make this simple vegetable shine through delicious potato dishes is a big part of their heritage. On the other hand, Oreshki are a classic desert (cookies filled with dulce de leche) that are known and loved throughout eastern and southern Europe, the dessert name translates to 'little nuts' and have been a beloved holiday season's treat in Eastern Europe for generations.
NOTE: Oreshki do not contain walnuts or nuts of any kind.
