Mosaic Workshop
Event description
Hanging by a Thread - Mosaic for Afghan Women is and international community mosaic project.
Mosaic artists from around the globe have been working since September 2021 to bring attention to the world about the social and economic conditions of Afghan women and girls after the takeover of the Taliban in August 2021. Over 1200 participants from 46 countries have created a mosaic of 10 x 25cm to be assembled as mosaic scarves. In Australia and New Zealand 466 mosaicists created a segment and seven scarf artworks were created.
Participating artists drew inspiration from Afghan motifs embroidered on a dress and made their own interpretation. These small art segments are assembled into a collective artwork. They represent the resilience of Afghan culture beyond its own borders in different parts of the world. Afghan culture will survive outside of its own country and reminds us that our own freedom is also Hanging by a Thread.Â
The seven scarves - artworks in Australia and New Zealand received seed funding from the UN International Year of Glass 22 and the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand (MAANZ) also assisted with funding.Â
Some of the artwork will feature in an exhibition at the Gawler Civic Centre Cafe area from 20 November 2023 - 17 January 2024.Â
The mosaic scarves will feature together at The Glassworks in Canberra during Harmony Week in March 2024.Â
In this workshop you will learn more about the project, and create your own mosaic segment similar to the Mosaic Scarf for Afghan Women to take with you - it would make a great Christmas gift (or you could keep it to enjoy yourself).Â
Please choose which time suits you best, and book for only one workshop.
Suitable for anyone aged 12 and up.Â
