Event description

The WA Department of Health is holding the biennial Mosquito Management Course in Mandurah from 9 - 13 September 2024.

  • environmental and public health

  • environmental engineering and pest control.

The course includes lectures, practical mosquito identification sessions, field work and equipment demonstrations and is offered approximately every 2 years.

The topics covered in this course include:

  • mosquito biology and ecology
  • diseases transmitted by mosquitoes
  • collection techniques (both for larval and adult mosquitoes)
  • mosquito identification
  • development of management plans
  • management/control approaches, chemicals and equipment including displays and demonstrations
Registration

Places on this course are limited and in high demand, so you are encouraged to register soon to avoid disappointment.

We encourage everyone interested in mosquito management to register their interest, but in the event the course is at capacity, priority will be given to Western Australian local governments and other agencies, and with a possible limit on the number of participants from each organisation.

Registration will close on 23 August 2024 or earlier if the course fills to capacity.

Registered course participants will be contacted during August with further details of the course timetable and what they need to bring.

Accommodation

You are encouraged to stay at the course venue for social and professional interaction however, some participants may choose to arrange accommodation elsewhere or commute to the venue each day.

Exclusive accommodation rates at the Sebel Mandurah for mosquito management course participants are available here.

You will require accommodation for either four or five nights, depending on whether you intend to travel to Mandurah on the Sunday evening or Monday morning (course registration will be at 10:00am on Monday 9 September 2024).

Meals

The course registration fee includes lunches and morning/afternoon teas. A course dinner will be provided on one night, but you will need to budget for other dinners.

Microscopes

It is important to maximise the number of binocular dissecting microscopes available for mosquito identification exercises, as this allows participants greater “hands-on” time during practical identification sessions.  Please let us know when you register if you can bring your own microscope. The microscope should have a magnification range of approximately 7x to 40x. If you are in any doubt about the suitability of your microscope, please ask for advice.
