Mother's Day - Cemetery Tour, The Northern
Event description
The Northern Cemetery contains the most spectacular memorial in the cityÂ
- that of the owner of "Larnach's Castle" - whose skull with the holes of a fatal bullet was absent from the grave for a few years. Â
It also contains the remains of the author of New Zealand's National Anthem, the builder of a clock which has run without winding since the 1860s, three men hanged in the Dunedin jail yard (one whose skull is still missing) and moved there when the jail was demolished, New Zealand's first female doctor, and a little boy who drowned at the wharves, aged five, in 1909.
Take a guided tour with local historian, Gregor Campbell and hear the stories that he has uncovered. Featured on the cover of the NZ Heritage Magazine for his cemetery tours, this is a special event not to be missed.Â
