A spoken word event for women with a fabulous feature poet and 8 open mic slots.

Mother Tongue Poetry - Amplifying and Equipping women's voices for 13 YEARS!

This event is hybrid, alcohol free, wheelchair accessible, and trans inclusive.

Mother Tongue is a place for Passionate, Powerful, Vulnerable and Honest performance; it stands aside from most Spoken Word events in its depth and authenticity.

For those who don't know; Mother Tongue is an intimate, warm and cozy night of Women's Spoken Word (poetry, stories, songs, etc). It is a space to sit back and listen, receive, as well as step up and share a piece yourself via the open mic.

It is a place to witness Woman in all of her/their incredible and nuanced facets.

All genders are welcome in the audience.

Our open mic stage is open to women and gender diverse individuals who align with womanhood.

- Free Entry for Valid Companion Cards - turn up no need to pre book.
- Open mic performers sign up on the door and get in free.
- 5 minutes allowed for each open mic performer.
- Chai and vegan yummies available.
- We recommend that you bring your own CUP!!

- This is an alcohol and drug-free event but due to the sensitive nature of content we ask that you be responsible about bringing minors and no one under 13 should attend.

Koraly Dimitriadis

KORALY DIMITRIADIS is an award-winning, best-selling poet, writer and actor who creates poetic film/theatre. She was born in Australia to Cypriot migrants and explores feminism through this lens. She is the author of poetry books Love & F--k Poems, long-listed for Poetry Book Awards UK (2024), winner best book of narrative poetry, American Book Fest (2025) also translated into Greek as Ποιήματα για αγάπη και για γαμήσι, She’s Not Normal (2024), Just Give Me The Pills (2018) winner best book of narrative poetry American Book Fest (2024), the short story collection The Mother Must Die (2024), and she is launching her 4th poetry book That's What They Do in February of this year. Koraly's vast opinion articles/personal essays have been published globally, including The Age, Washington Post, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Today. These days she publishes most of her commentary on Tiktok, Facebook and Instagram due to media censorship. Her award-winning poetry film Yiayia mou won first place at the Monologues and Poetry International Film Festival in California and was a finalist for International film festivals and poetry prizes and was televised in Australia on SBS and Cyprus on PIK. www.koralydimitriadis.com

Mother Tongue is an organisation passionate about supporting the voices of women and gender diverse individuals who align with womanhood.

The organisation centres around our live events and has become Melbourne’s biggest Women’s Spoken Word event and one of the most established Spoken Word events in the city. It is hosted and run by Fleassy Malay and KAtoe Lohner. A place for Passionate, Powerful, Vulnerable and Honest performance; it stands aside from, most Spoken Word events in its depth and authenticity.

The organisation has been running since the end of 2012 and has evolved from a monthly event to the NFP organisation it is today. Mother Tongue supports these marginalised voices through its own live events, online events, and youtube channel as well as aligning with other events and organisations to get more women and gender diverse voices onto their platforms. In the past, we have worked with the Melbourne Writers Festival, Seven Sisters Festival, Rainbow Serpent Festival, Melbourne Spoken Word, Australian Poetry Slam, Banyule City Council and more.

We showcase all forms of the Spoken Word, including poetry, comedy, rap, song and storytelling. The key factor is that it is a platform for honest stories. Some of these stories are hard to hear, others are filled with joy and sensuality. All of these stories are welcome in our space. Mother Tongue is proud to have been a catalytic force in the emergence of many incredibly talented writers and performers.
