Mourning [A] BLKstar & Spektrum
Event description
Multi-generational, gender, genre non-conforming amalgam of Black culture, Mourning [A] BLKstar, is dedicated to sharing stories and songs of America’s unfolding apocalypse. Their music melds live instrumentation with hip-hop production creating sonic frequencies that illuminate the African Diaspora. Founded in Cleveland, the US-based Afrofuturist collective continues touring their music globally across Europe and the US, playing festivals from Crossing Border in Berlin with Lonnie Holley to Big Ears Festival and Le Guess Who? in Utrecht.
A band whose importance is fast becoming evident', wrote Wire Magazine's Neil Kulkarni on Mourning [A] BLKstar. The collective, made up of musicians, writers, and multimedia artists, has a bountiful track record, amassing several releases under its belt since 2015. Their music is for both eulogies and revolutions, as they expand upon contemporary Black consciousness by forging ongoing dialogues between hip-hop production techniques and live instrumentation.
Spektrum is a neo-soul duo rooted in Philadelphia’s Beyond The Bars program—a student driven, community-based music organization dedicated to interrupting cycles of violence and divestment by providing youth with instruments, mentorship, and a platform for creative expression. Originally students in the program, Spektrum’s members grew into educators, returning to help strengthen positive cycles of creation and inspiration.Drawing from a wide range of influences bass heavy rhythms, expressive guitar work, nocturnal grooves, and poetic urgency—their music is both meditative and confrontational. Formed at the end of the pandemic, Spektrum emerged not just as a band but an ongoing conversation between identities and sounds. As a duo, Spektrum stays open to collaboration, building with other artists to expand their sonic and creative reach. Through self produced projects and raw audiovisual storytelling, they aspire to carve out a distinct lane in the underground music scene. Their compositions speak to themes of longing, transformation, and resilience. Blending raw emotional truths with the search for something sacred in a fractured world. Making music for liminal spaces and the people who inhabit them.
