Move with the Ocean - a Contact Improvisation Dance Introductury Workshop

A celebration of the beautiful dance form Contact Improvisation (CI) , and a warm invitation for those new to it to share in its life changing potential.

I just adore this dance practice, and believe that for the delightful humans who partake in it's endless opportunity for growth good things come. It has helped me immensely and I want to offer that chance to just as many people as I can.

In CI we learn strength, flow, agility, awareness and how to connect with others physically and emotionally. It is potentially acrobatic, meditative, slow or fast, silly and sacred, all depending on the person, the body or the day. Appropriate for anyone of any age or ability.

So I offer this affordable event for those completely new to the form to come along and receive a deep grounding in the form. It is also established CI dancers to come together and exchange skills and meet new people.

Some of what we'll be learning:

• Basic movements to stay in touch whilst moving with a partner

• Control of touch pressure, speed and other spectrums of dance

• Exploring the concepts of leading and following, and how they do and don't apply for CI

• The basic acrobatics of the dance

About the Form

Contact Improv (CI) is a study in relationship to others, and the dance is a chance to hone that with skill, movement and touch.

With no set steps and no set leader, participants have the challenge and opportunity of practicing the widest possible range of dance moves, and to develop skills around presence, leading, following, weight sharing, fitness and flexibility.

It's an utterly joyous practice, that we hope sparks great changes in your life.

Running times

• Intro Class
  1 hour, 2 to 3pm
  
  $10 Only
  
  If you're not sure of the form and just want to dip your toe in. We'll cover as much as we can and you'll get a reasonable idea of if the form is for you. You're able to then purchase and join in with the rest of the workshop if you so wish.
  

• 2nd Workshop Session
  1.5 hours, 3 to 4:30pm
  

  Sharing further around the fundamentals of the form.
  

• Break
  15 minutes, 4:30pm to 4:45pm
  

• 3rd Workshop Session
  1.25 hours, 4:45 to 6pm
  

  Getting a little deeper into this wonderful form.

What to wear

Pants and long sleeves are ideal to help rolling and sliding on the floor and to comfortably connect with others.

Contact Culture

This event is run under the Not-For-Profit organisation Contact Culture, which is dedicated to spreading ‘Dance and Democracy’. It is offered with the ethic of not letting an aspiring attendee’s lack of money lead to a lack of dance or community.
