MOVING BEYOND HARMONY BREAKFAST EVENT

Morella Community centre is hosting a breakfast function with a guest speaker, Tasneem Chopra. Hosted on the 21st March our event commemorates International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

As Morella Community Centre continues its lifelong work towards inclusion, we seek to move beyond celebration and look critically at our inclusion practices. Join us as we discuss moving beyond harmony celebration in conversation with Tasneem.

Situated at the Watershed Café on Kaurna land, the Greenfields wetlands are an area of special cultural knowledge for Kaurna people. Following the keynote speech and breakfast, participants have the option to attend a local Kaurna cultural tour with elder, Uncle Frank Wanganeen.

Tasneem Chopra

A Cross-cultural Consultant, Tasneem is a recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award from La Trobe University for her work in the diversity sector. She has also been appointed an Anti-Racism Ambassador by the Australian Human Rights Commission and in 2017 was listed as one of 50 Women you Need to Know in the Herald Sun International Women’s Day count. In previous years she has been listed in The Age Magazine’s Top 100 most influential 'Movers and Shakers in Melbourne and The Australian Magazines Leader series, of Top Ten Thinkers.

Through her consultancy, she speaks across the private and public sector to issues of leadership, diversity, cultural competence, and intersectional discrimination.

When not delivering keynotes, workshops or emceeing events, Tasneem is a Board Director for Ambulance Victoria, The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), NOW Australia and Chair of the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights. She is also an outgoing Director for the Luke Batty Foundation and Chair of Lentil As Anything as well as former Curator at both the Immigration Museum and Islamic Museum of Australia.

A TEDxMelbourne presenter (Don’t Believe the Hype: Exceed it) and writer, Tasneem’s has delivered several conference papers locally and internationally. She has a background in psychology and sociology and a Masters in International Development from La Trobe University, where she is also a Golden Key alumnus.

Tasneem has featured in numerous editorial outlets, including The Guardian, The Age and The Australian and is a regular contributor to SBS Life. She has also appeared on BBC’s IQ2 Debates, Q&A, The Project, Compass and is a regular on ABC’s The Drum and ABC Radio, as a host and occasional panellist.

Uncle Frank Wanganeen

Uncle Frank Wanganeen is a Kaurna Elder born at Wallaroo on Narungga country. He has lived in Adelaide for most of his life. Frank has been involved in various committees that deal with reconciliation, Aboriginal heritage, native title, social justice and the revival of the Kaurna language. He is a passionate cultural educator and a tour guide having operated the Kaurna Cultural Walking Tours in the Adelaide CBD and Salisbury area.
