    Event description

    We are delighted to invite you to attend the 8th annual Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services Research Symposium on Thursday October 24th, 2024.

    This year's theme is "Research, Innovation and Collaboration - Achieving Better Care Together."

    Our keynote speaker, A/Prof Matthew Gullo will be presenting 'Precision mental health care for addiction: Translating research into practice.'


    Connect with peers and experts from your field and visit our poster exhibit showcasing research and innovation that is occurring across Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services.



    A Coffee Cart will be onsite serving barista coffee from 8:30am. Morning tea will be provided for this event.


    This is an in-person event. Recordings will be made available for viewing after the Symposium for those who are unable to attend.

     

    What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

    The main campus of Princess Alexandra Hospital is located at 199 Ipswich road Woolloongabba, a 10 minute drive south of Brisbane's central business district.

    • The main hospital entrance is accessible via the Ipswich Road entrance

    • There are alternative wheelchair access points at levels 1 and 2 via the Cornwell Street entrance

    Parking

    There are two privately operated car parks close to PAH. There is no other on-site parking available on campus. Brisbane City Council parking restrictions apply in all streets surrounding the hospital.

    Drop off zones

    PAH has two drop off/pick up zones for the main hospital building. these zones can be accessed via the main Ipswich Road entrance and the Cornwall Street entrances. These zones are subject to time restrictions.

    Car parks

    Metro Parking multi-storey car park is located on the hospital campus on the corner of Ipswich Road and O'Keefe Street. Entry is off Ipswich Road. There is a link way to the foyer of the hospital.

    PA Parking multi story car park is located opposite the hospital on Ipswich Road. Entry to this car park is off Wolseley Street. There is a link way over Ipswich Road and a short walk to the main foyer.

    Disabled parking

    Vehicles displaying a disabled parking permit can park in designated disabled bays on level 4 of the metro multi-storey car park. PA Parking have disabled bays on level 2. PAH staff can provide wheelchair assistance if required: please use the green courtesy phone at the entrance to the link way on level 5 to phone for assistance.

    Speaker Bios



    A/Prof Matthew Gullo



    Associate Professor Matthew Gullo is a clinical psychologist in the School of Applied Psychology and the Centre for Mental Health, Griffith University. Matthew's research seeks to improve the assessment and treatment of addiction through a better understanding of the complex biosocial cognitive mechanisms involved, revealing new targets for personalised intervention. He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed scientific publications and been awarded over $5M in research funding. Matthew led the ‘Psychosocial Interventions’ section of the Australian National Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems. A true scientist-practitioner, he continues to provide treatment services as a Visiting Senior Clinical Psychologist at the Alcohol and Drug Assessment Unit, Princess Alexandra Hospital. Here, he has led several innovations in service delivery that have benefited over 10,500 patients.



    Dr Marianne Wyder



    Dr Marianne Wyder is a social worker with a background in sociology. Over the past 20 years she has worked in various research and clinical positions in the Government, Non-Government and University sector. Her research experience spans the health sector and includes expert knowledge on mental health, family and carer recovery, involuntary treatment, drug and/or alcohol abuse and suicidal behaviours. She employs a variety of mixed methodology and has conducted a number of co-produced pieces of research. She is currently employed as the Senior Research Fellow in Metro South Addiction and Mental Health services where her role involves conducting and facilitating practice based research, service evaluations, as well as supporting clinicians to undertake practice based research projects.



    Dr Mike Trott



    Mike is a Research Fellow in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Evidence Synthesis with the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research and Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Service. Mike's background was firstly in the UK military, with a subsequent career in the fitness industry - being named the global top fitness instructor in 2015, and European top fitness educator in 2018. Mike then completed his PhD in 2022, with his current research interests spanning the umbrella of mental health and statistics - in particular physical activity promotion in people with severe mental health, intergenerational child maltreatment, and statistical considerations in complex clinical trials.



    Dr Graham Pringle



    Dr Graham Pringle (PhD) has experience in Residential and Foster Care, Outdoor Education, Adventure Based Youth Work, and Adult Training. He is a director of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, and Youth Flourish Outdoors, trainer for the School of Outdoor Therapeutic Practice, a friend of Outdoor Therapy Centre for Research and Practice and a casual academic with Charles Sturt University. Graham has spent over 20 years pursuing adventure as therapy for adolescents. Having worked outdoors with young people since 1985 he has studied widely and holds post graduate and undergraduate qualifications in adventure-based youth work, teaching, youth and family interventions, and psychology. Graham has published a range of texts for practitioners and teaches a short course with over 1000 graduates to date.



    Nikki Geffen

    Nikki Geffen B Occ Thy, Grad Dip Community Mental Health, has worked in mental health services in Australia and the UK as an Occupational Therapist, case manager, Team Leader and administrator. She is currently working as a senior research assistant within MSAMHS and is involved in a number of projects aiming to improve service delivery to consumers.



    Dr Jon Paul Teo



    Dr Jon Paul Teo is Consultant Psychiatrist to the Statewide Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre, based in Brisbane, Queensland. Alongside his passion for Transcultural Psychiatry, he is pursuing further psychoanalytic training. He is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland, a hobbyist academic, and committed to the supervision and training of the next generation of Psychiatrists in building culturally-safe mental health services.

    Dr Seiji Humphries


    Seiji is a PhD-qualified social worker who works in a part-time research officer role for The Research and Learning Network team. He has 20 years experience in the mental health field, having worked across the government, university and not-for-profit sectors. His career has focussed predominantly on research and evaluation, including completion of a PhD thesis in 2017 and coordination of service evaluations and a clinical trial site.

    Ms Una Window

    Una works in a part-time capacity for The Research and Learning team in a research assistant role. She is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with 30 years of social work practise. She has worked previously in senior clinical social work roles in Government community and in-patient mental health settings and now works in private practice as a trauma-informed counsellor and professional supervisor.
