MTASA COMPETITIONS DAY 2026

Miriam Hyde Junior Award & Miriam Hyde Senior Award

The Music Teachers’ Association of South Australia warmly invites you to the 2026 Competitions Day, featuring the Miriam Hyde Junior and Senior Awards.

This year’s competition will feature both a preliminary video round and a live final to be held at the concert auditorium at PianoMax by Kawai.

  • Miriam Hyde Junior Award Final: 2:00pm – 4:00pm

  • Miriam Hyde Senior Award Final: 4:15pm – 6:15pm

ENTRY DEADLINE

Including video submission:

8:00pm Monday, 12 October 2026

No late entries will be accepted.

ENTRY PROCESS

• All entries and payments must be submitted online via Humanitix.
• Recordings must be submitted as unlisted YouTube links.
• Competitors must be available to attend the FINAL to be eligible for a prize.
Video submission deadline: 8:00pm Monday, 12 October 2026.

VIDEO SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• The recording must be done in one continuous take.
• Recordings cannot be posted online except as unlisted YouTube videos.
• The camera must be positioned to capture the performer’s face, both hands and the instrument. If feet are used (e.g., piano pedalling), they must also be visible.
• The recording must clearly show both the performer and accompanist, with balanced, audible sound.
• Once the video is uploaded, the unlisted YouTube URL must be submitted via the enrolment form.
• We will inform the teachers whether the students will be selected into final by Tuesday 20 October 2026.
• Competitors must perform the same repertoire in both preliminary and final rounds.

Miriam Hyde Junior Award

Entry Fee: $50

• First Prize: $250
• Second Prize: $100
• Third Prize: $50

Miriam Hyde Senior Award

Entry Fee: $65

• First Prize: $400
• Second Prize: $200
• Third Prize: $100

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES

Miriam Hyde Junior Award

• 2–3 contrasting works
• Maximum playing time: 12 minutes
• One Australian work is compulsory
• The other work(s) may be selected from the Baroque/Classical and/or Romantic/Modern repertoire
• At least one work must be performed from memory
• It is expected that applicants will be performing works equivalent to at least Grade 4 AMEB standard or equivalent.

Miriam Hyde Senior Award

• Any number of Contrasting works within the time limit
• Playing time: minimum 9 minutes, maximum 18 minutes
• One Australian work is compulsory
• The other work(s) may be selected from the Baroque/Classical and/or Romantic/Modern repertoire
• At least one work must be performed from memory
• It is expected that applicants will be performing works equivalent to at least Grade 7 AMEB standard or equivalent.

PLEASE NOTE

• No coaching is permitted during the performance.
• Photography and recording are not permitted during final performances.
• All copyright laws must be observed. APRA/AMCOS forms, along with original or licensed copies of music, must be provided.
• If invited to the final - Competitors must check in at least 20 minutes before the start of their session.
• The adjudicator’s decision is final.
• The prizes may be withheld if a satisfactory standard is not met.
• All winners will be invited to perform at the MTASA event in January 2027.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The competition is open to students of all instruments and voice.

Competitors must be students of an MTASA member, who must be their principal teacher for the instrument or voice being performed.

AGE LIMIT

Miriam Hyde Junior Award

Competitors aged 15 years and under as of 1 May 2026

Miriam Hyde Senior Award

Competitors aged 16 years and above as of 1 May 2026

ELIGIBILITY EXCLUSIONS

Previous First Prize winners of the Miriam Hyde Awards, including winners of the former Miriam Hyde Open Award, are not eligible to enter the competition again.

All other students, including previous Second and Third Prize winners, are eligible to enter the relevant category, subject to the age requirements.
