Older Women Count: Mural Dedication
Description
Making older women visible: a mural unveiling for the 16 Days of Activism
Join OWN NSW in our lovely community garden to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism, as we unveil a new mural honouring older women.
Older women are too often overlooked in conversations about violence against women. Their experiences, safety and right to support must be recognised. This mural is a lasting reminder that older women must be visible in our communities, in public policy and in every effort to end violence against women.
Commissioned by OWN NSW with support from Inner West Council, the mural was created by Sydney artist Sam McAleer (SMACKAS) in collaboration with our members. It grew from Colour Your Power, our Seniors Festival project, where older women explored what powerful ageing means to them through words, colours and symbols reflecting their lives, cultural identities and hopes for the future.
Their creativity and experiences are now part of our shared community landscape: a celebration of the strength, diversity and contribution of older women.
Come along for the dedication, light refreshments and good company as we celebrate the women at the heart of this artwork and stand together for their right to live free from violence.
