Points of Contact: Museums & Biennales Between Worlds

Biennales, like museums, are not fixed structures; they are living systems shaped by the movement of people, ideas, histories and forms of exchange.

Join leading international curators and museum directors for a conversation on the changing role of biennales and museums today, using the Biennale of Sydney as a starting point. Gain insight from Adriano Pedrosa (Artistic Director, Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand), Mami Kataoka (Director, Mori Art Museum), Eungie Joo (Curator, Writer, Educator) and Carol Yinghua Lu (Art Historian, Curator, Director of Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum), moderated by Victor Wang, Executive Director, Artspace.

Drawing on their recent work across the Venice Biennale, Yokohama Triennale, Sharjah Biennial and the Biennale of Sydney, they consider how large-scale exhibitions shape the institutions around them, and how institutions and biennales, in turn, shape exhibitions.

Taking Sydney and Tokyo as two contemporary contact zones within the Asia-Pacific, cities shaped by movement, exchange, migration and layered cultural histories, the event creates a space to consider how institutions can operate across borders while remaining grounded in local contexts.

This event is presented as a collaboration between Artspace’s International Curators Program (ICP) and Mori Art Museum’s Global Art Professionals Development Project.
