    Event description

We will be making shiitake mushroom logs across two days: Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of September from 10am to 3pm each day. The process involves drilling holes into a freshly cut oak log, hammering in pre-inoculated dowels, and sealing the holes with wax.

It's an easy process that anyone can do!

A shiitake log can produce mushrooms for up to seven years before the log is totally rotten away by the mushroom, providing successive flushes whenever the weather suits it. Their only demand is frequent watering, but if they've been neglected they can be refreshed with an overnight dunk. They take up to 18 months after inoculation before they will produce mushrooms, and will need to be protected from drying out in that time. Water once or twice a week and protect from direct sunlight.

There will be a fee for those who wish to take a log home, or you can come along for free and help us prepare logs for our farm. You'll also be able to take a tour of our mushroom farm in Drysdale and purchase oyster mushrooms on site.
