Witness the living legacy of Indian Classical music passed down through the direct disciple of the Santoor legend Shiv Kumar Sharma!
Described as the sound of the Himalayas, the Kashmiri Santoor is an ancient instrument with a sweet, pristine and stirring sound coming from its 100 strings played with hammers in the unique style of the Indian masters. Santoor is revered for its ethereal sound that is both meditational and uplifting. Vinay Desai a disciple of Shiv Kumar Sharma, is one of the few maestros of the instrument outside of India. He carries the stylistic legacy of the great Shiv Kumar Sharma in his playing and has performed in India, Canada, USA, Bahamas, Argentina and Australia.
He is joined on tablas by Jay Dabgar, Australia ‘s foremost performer of Indian classical percussion, a celebrated tabla performer who has sponsored and accompanied many of the great musical artists from India such as his recent tour with Sitar vituoso Purbayan Chatterjee. Jay is a leading exponent of classical Hindustani tablas as well as a dynamic experimenter of Indian fusion music.
Supporting with a short rendition to open the night is locally based Indian classical and world music performer Shivam Rath who learnt from the living slide guitar legend Debashish Bhattacharia and continues to share and help propagate Indian Classical Music in Australia having performed alongside many great maestros himself including his recent concerts with Sangeet Mishra (8th generation Sarangi Maestro).
Vinay and Jay will carry the main act with a sublime atmosphere of classical Indian Raga, illustrating the feelings of vast space, timelessness and the majesty of the Himalayan mountains with the gentle meditative introduction known as Alap before they combine to weave an intricate and thrilling display of classical Indian melody and rhythms on the Santoor and Tabla. The improvisational and blissful interplay of beats and notes, and stunning virtuosity that they generate capture the heart, calm the mind and uplift the soul. Their combined performance truly generates appreciation in the audience experience.
