My Australian Mafia Road Trip: exploring criminological imagination on the ’ndrangheta through a podcast
Event description
Calling all criminology students, Italian studies enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by Italian culture, migration, and heritage! Join us for a “Podcast Night”, designed specifically for those curious about the intricate world of the mafia and its cultural implications in Australia. This event will feature the opportunity to listen to excerpts from the SBS podcast “My Australian Mafia Road Trip,” co-hosted by SBS producer and podcaster Carlo Oreglia, and Professor of Criminology at the University of Essex, UK, Anna Sergi, author of the book "Chasing the Mafia” and expert on the ’ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia.
What connects a stabbing in Fitzroy to a series of murders in the Queen Victoria Market and the disappearance of an aspiring politician in Griffith? The evening will take on a “talk-show” format, fostering discussions around the themes presented in the podcast. The audience will explore and reflect with the speakers on changing perceptions regarding the Calabrian mafia in Australia, challenging established truths and opening new avenues for understanding.
Our goal is to demystify some of the myths surrounding the ‘ndrangheta in Italy and in Australia and fostering a renewed self-perception among Italians and Calabrians specifically. Join us for an evening of enlightening dialogue and community connection!
Prof Anna Sergi is Professor of Criminology at the University of Essex. Originally from Calabria, she has been developing her academic expertise on the ’ndrangheta, the mafia from Calabria, and on drug trafficking through seaports.
