My Independence: Classroom Practice That Builds Life Skills

This practical and reflective CPD session explores the purpose and importance of the My Independence curriculum in preparing children and young people with SEND for adulthood. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of how independence can be embedded throughout the school day, not just during designated lessons, through meaningful routines, communication opportunities and real-life experiences. The session examines effective approaches to developing life skills, confidence, problem-solving, self-care, community participation and functional communication across all pathways.

Through discussion, case studies and practical activities, staff will reflect on current practice, consider how to reduce prompt dependency and identify opportunities to increase pupil participation and ownership of learning. Participants will leave with clear, actionable strategies for promoting independence consistently across their classroom and wider school environment.

This module has been accredited by the NCFE and can be considered when working towards the NCFE Award. Participants are required to complete five modules, including the mandatory module.
