    Event description

The HRC invites you to a special evening lecture, presented in the ANU Classics Museum as part of our 50th Anniversary Celebrations.

Dr Farjana Mahbuba will explore how her passion for reading and writing shaped her identity and personal growth. Raised in a home filled with books, words became her sanctuary and a tool for resistance against societal and political injustices. Migration to Australia offered a new perspective on her colonial past, reigniting her commitment to writing. This piece highlights the transformative power of words in the pursuit of knowledge, justice, and empowerment.

We will be serving light refreshments accompanying this event. Registration is essential.

    Speaker:
Dr. Farjana Mahbuba is a researcher specializing in the sociology of religion. She completed her first PhD at Western Sydney University, concentrating on folk Islam and Muslim women’s gender perceptions in urban Bangladesh. After a five-year career break to raise her young children, Dr. Mahbuba returned to academia and is currently pursuing a second PhD at Australian Catholic University, focusing on the intersectionality of religion and migration in spousal financial abuse among Bangladeshi migrant Muslim women in Australia. She has worked as a sessional teacher at Western Sydney University, Macquarie University, and Australian Catholic University. Born and raised in the Global South and now living in the Global North, Dr. Mahbuba is a passionate advocate for social justice. She is involved with several non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting women and migrants. Outside of academia, she enjoys traveling to historical places, gardening in her backyard, and spending time with family and friends.
