My Story, My World: Weave with Bangalow Palm Workshop

A series of workshops for young people aged 12 to 25 years old during School Holidays in April

Participants will be introduced to sustainable, waste-free, and accessible approaches to artmaking, inspiring them to nurture their creativity while developing a deeper respect for the environment around them. The workshop encourages connection to place and invites participants to see the creative potential in found materials, opening possibilities for imaginative play and making.

Random weave with Bangalow Palm

Using the flowering stems of the Bangalow Palm, you’ll learn a fun and creative random weave technique. Create a basket, sculptural art piece, wall hanging, or anything else your imagination inspires.

Woven Jewelry

Explore a variety of weaving techniques using paper twine and foraged plant fibers to create unique earrings, pendants, or other wearable adornments.

Palm Sheath Wall Pockets & Cordage Making

10:00am-2:30pm, 9 Apr, Thursday

12:00-12:30pm - Lunch Break

Create a sculptural vessel using foraged palm sheaths and other treasures from nature. You’ll learn how to prepare the materials, cut, hand-stitch, and embellish them with found natural elements to make a beautiful wall pocket or wearable pouch.

Using ancient cordage-making techniques, you’ll also create a strap from plant fibers to hang or wear your piece.

This series of workshops is part of the Creativity and Wellbeing for Young People program, funded by Healthway and delivered in partnership with the Kids Research Institute Australia and their SEW-ART Framework, with support from Ellenbrook Youth Centre and the City of Swan.
