Description
Shaam ka Nashta translates to our evening tea: a time for gathering around biscuits and chai, conversation and gossip, grumbling and story-sharing.
We welcome mothers & daughters & anyone who would like to celebrate them! This will be a cozy gathering with 5 featured poetry readers, some chai-and-conversation, an invitation to write a postcard for a person that has nurtured you & a closing reading from the recently published collection: my mother is a mixed metaphor.

6.15: Readings from featured poets (Shivani Kumar, Darshita Jain, Ola Faleti, Joy Young & Nina Sudhakar)
6.45: Postcard writing (We’ll pass around postcards/cards and invite folks to write a note to someone who raised them (a mother, sister, grandparent, a place, a meal, a teacher, lover, friend, the earth, anyone or anything that has nurtured you).
7.00: Closing Reading (Shivani Gupta)
We will have time for signing of books, and to convene over snacks & tea (available for purchase from the wonderful Nabala Cafe).

Registration: Tip-jar based, all that is raised will be split amongst the featured readers.
We will bring stationery for you, all you have to do is arrive.

Shivani Gupta
Shivani Gupta is a Chicago-based writer, researcher & facilitator. Her chapbook my mother is a mixed metaphor was published by Rockwood Press. Her work has been also featured globally across BBC, Forbes, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Baby Teeth Journal, Epiphany Magazine, Corpus Callosum & more. She is a current In-Surreal-Life fellow & serves as the Development Committee Chair for the Chicago Poetry Center. She works as a Behavioral Scientist & has a background in Psychology.
Darshita Jain
Darshita Jain is an arts administrator, cultural worker and poet in the city of Chicago. In the last decade she has finished her masters in Arts Journalism, worked as Program Director at Woman Made Gallery and as the Director of Outreach & Artist Programs at Lillstreet Art Center. She is on the Board for the Chicago Poetry Center and serves as the essays editor at Honey Literary. Her writing can be found in Sixty Inches from Center,Chicago Reader, Street Lit magazine, Hooligan Magazine and more.
Shivani Kumar
Shivani Kumar is a poet and writer from Worcester, Massachusetts. Her work is guided by return and departure to self and place alike. She is currently working on her first book that holds themes of community, belonging, grief, and identity as a Tamil-American woman. Her work can be found in the Chicago Reader, Sarka, Sixty Inches from Center, Kajal Magazine, and her Substack, come in for tea. She resides in Chicago by the lake.
Ola Faleti
Ola Faleti is the author of fiction chapbook Soft & Solid (2024) and an artist and arts educator based in Chicago, Illinois. Her favorite number is nine. She believes there’s no such thing as too many flowers.
Joy Young
Joy Young is a Chicago-born poet and storyteller. Her work has appeared in Poetry East, Lunch Ticket, Portable Gray, Harpy Hybrid Review, and Black Warrior Review. She is a poet-in-residence and board member for The Chicago Poetry Center, a Creative Writing Teaching Artist at FAME Center Chicago, as well as the Chicagoland Regional Coordinator for the Poetry Out Loud Teen Recitation Competition. Nina Sudhakar
Nina Sudhakar is a writer, poet, and lawyer based in Chicago. She is the author of Where to Carry the Sound (winner of the 2024 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction and a 2024 Foreword INDIES Award) and two poetry chapbooks, Matriarchetypes and Embodiments.
