Event description

Aunty Maxine Zealey was the Coordinator of Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre in Brisbane.   Aunty designed and implemented culturally appropropriate programs at the centre which gave students, parents and caregivers the opportunity to experience the living traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  Activities included song and dance, art, Torres Strait Islander culture, bushwalk, foods and fibres, storytelling and boomerang throwing.

Aunty Maxine is able to provide a cultural workshop to our Indigenous Women's Group which would include the following.

1. Acknowledgement to Country

2. Yarning Circle

3.  Traditional story telling and explanations of traditional art symbols.

4.  Demonstration on how to use traditional brush techniques and dot work.

5.  Demonstration on how to tell your own story using symbols and traditional art.

6.  Supply of all canvas and art supplies to each participant.

7.  Guidance as participants paint and yarn.

7. Blessing and closing

Aunty Maxine, now retired, has led a long professional life as a valued artist, educator and leader in community.  She co-wrote the Cross-cultural curriculum for Brisbane Catholic Education with her sister Professor and Doctor Nereda White.  She has run many Indigenous womens groups around Australia and is well known for art work and contributions to Reconciliation Action Plans.
