Dreamtime Stories & Art Workshop
Event description
Telling stories is as ancient as humankind and the Dreamtime stories of Australia’s own First Nations are some of the most deep-rooted on the planet. These timeless stories are the foundations of First Nations culture.
To celebrate story-telling and share this deep knowledge with our youngest Australians, South Eveleigh is honoured to offer a Dreamtime Story-Telling Session with Aunty Ali Golding, a respected local Elder, as part of NAIDOC Week 2022.
The story-telling session will run for an hour and following there will be arts and crafts stations set up so children can be creative and thoughtful, exploring and recreating some of Aunty Ali’s treasured stories. Everything provided in the art workshop is free and the session will run from 11-11.45am.
There are two other free art workshops available at 12pm and 1pm. You can register here.
Please make sure that everyone attending (adults, children, parents and guardians) has registered for a ticket individually. 1 ticket = 1 person.
All school ages are welcome! Parents or guardians must attend and supervise their child/ren for the duration of the activities. This is not a drop-off event. The event may need to be rescheduled subject to changes out of our control.
The entrance to the Foundry Building is via 1 Locomotive Street. Enter through the main entrance of the Commonwealth Bank office and follow the yellow signs.
A proud Biripi woman who grew up on an Aboriginal mission at Purfleet outside Taree in rural NSW, Aunty Ali moved to Bourke in NSW, before marrying Englishman Peter Golding at Byrock, where they had two children. She then moved to Sydney and had five more children at Camperdown Mother’s & Babies Hospital in Camperdown, before settling in The Block in Redfern where she raised her seven children for more than 20 years.
Aunty Ali also became one of the first Aboriginal education assistants at Cleveland High School in Sydney in the 1980s and later graduated from Nungalynga College in Darwin with a Diploma of Theology. In 2011, Aunty Ali was appointed inaugural Elder in Residence in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of NSW, supporting the training of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors.
Aunty Ali has also made other important contributions to many national and international forums, including the World Spirit Healing Conference in Canada, International Women’s Day events in parliament, the Women’s Reconciliation Network, the NSW Reconciliation Council and AnTAR. In all that she shares so generously, including her stories, Aunty Ali reminds us how to stay connected and strong.
Aunty Ali will share her favourite Dreamtime stories including:
Tiddalik - 'The Biggest Frog in the Whole Wide World'
Echidna - 'How He Got His Quills'
