Narrative tension is the key to creating a deep impact upon the reader. It’s different to drama and conflict, and understanding both the ways in which it’s different and how to use it properly can transform your story. If your turning points feel weak, if you have the sense that something is missing in your novel, or if your writing is lacking energy and you're not sure how to rework your story into a compelling narrative, then this workshop is for you.

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

• Understand the difference between narrative tension, conflict and drama.

• Explore the different types of tension you can use in your writing.

• Practise techniques that allow tension to emerge from the characters and their situations, rather than by imposing hooks and twists onto the story.

• Examine some short texts to see how other authors use narrative tension.

• Understand the different ways narrative tension can enhance the reading experience and apply this knowledge to your own work.

Format

This is an online workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be hosted via Zoom. This workshop is suitable for writers of all levels and writing backgrounds.
