Event description

Fashion today uses a vast array of harmful chemicals and carcinogenic components that are common to artificial or synthetic dyes. Natural dyes have not only been used for thousands of years but are better for our health and wellbeing.  They can be derived from plants, animals, and minerals but also biological sources such as vegetables and fungi as well.

This workshop with Tamara Leacock from REMUSE will show participants how to use upcycled clothes and fabric in order to give them a second life.

Participants are encouraged to bring along a cotton t-shirt, apron, or pillowcase to transform on the day.

Other items to bring include:  a mason jar or container for the wet dyeable; a notebook and pen; an apron (or dye friendly clothes and shoes); a pair of clean, dye only gloves; and a face mask.

FACILITATOR

REMUSE is a Melbourne-based clothing label inspired by biomimicry, artisan techniques, and BIPOC (Black and Indigenous people of color) futurism. Founded on the principles of diversity and low impact design, the pieces are created from natural, organic, deadstock, and reclaimed plant-based materials. The clothes are hand-dyed with both plant-based and low-impact fibre reactive dyes. REMUSE is cruelty-free and seeks to create clothing that models nature while also being complementary to it. Founded by New York-born designer and stylist Tamara Leacock, it is a wearable art practice rooted in resilience and reimagining new futures for adornment for contemporary bodies.
