Identifying, valuing and quality assuring authentic student learning

Global experts Sally Brown and Martin Johnson of the Cambridge Assessment Network are teaming up with the SACE Board to deliver an interactive and challenging symposium on the nature of evidence in learning.

This session will engage participants to examine their perceptions of learning evidence by considering what counts as evidence, exploring the perceived hierarchy of evidence and the comparability of evidence.

Session 1: What is formal, non-formal, and informal learning and how can we identify and value this learning?

Session 2: Equity and comparability. Is there a hierarchy between formal, non-formal, and informal learning and how does it apply to SACE assessments?

Session 3: What conditions are required to quality assure authentic evidence that provide trust and confidence in the integrity of verification and warranting?

Presenters

Martin started out as a Primary teacher – working in London and Southeast England for 10 years. He has worked in educational research for 20 years.

He is now a senior researcher at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a Fellow of the International Society for Design and Development in Education, and an Executive Member of the British Association for International and Comparative Education.

The main focus of his work is on the interaction between assessment, learning and curriculum issues. Projects have ranged across academic and vocationally related contexts and investigated assessment issues in diverse sectors (e.g. primary through to post-compulsory education).

Martin’s general research interest is on how to better understand assessment as enacted practice. This has involved using assorted qualitative research methods to gather the perspectives of those involved with, or affected by, assessment.

Sally Brown is the Director of Cambridge Assessment Network, a team within the Research Division of Cambridge University Press & Assessment delivering high-quality professional development training to the assessment community.

Sally has been the Director since 2016 and during this time she has built a successful product portfolio and introduced a membership programme to support the professionalisation of assessment by building a strong international community of practitioners.

Sally has led international delegates, including ministry heads of education and senior policy officials, on both the Cambridge International Study Programme and the Leadership Programme for National Assessment, with a focus on policy and leadership in assessment.

Prior to joining Cambridge Assessment Network Sally was Head of Policy for OCR, the UK awarding body at Cambridge. During this time Sally was responsible for managing stakeholder engagement and consultation for a major policy initiative of education reform of GCSE, A levels and level 3 vocational qualifications.

Prior to working in education, Sally’s focus was in health care where she practiced as a clinician before teaching at Brunel University and Teesside University where she helped set up the Faculty for Health Studies. Sally has also worked for the Department for Health on various national projects.

Sally holds a level 7 coaching qualification.
