About the workshop: 

For those familiar with personal journaling or keeping sketchbooks, this full weekend workshop or creative retreat is a gentle way to combine art with your love of nature!  Many different approaches to Nature Journaling will be discussed over the weekend including garden diaries, travel notebooks, plant studies and nature writing.  The workshop includes a ‘mindful walk’ around Fleurieu Arthouse and guided instruction from Tabatha to find your own style and voice.  

Tabatha notes, “As children we are encouraged to be curious about our world. Most of us remember the joy of discovering things in nature for the first time, like seeing a bird or insect up close, finding a shell or bone in the sand, picking wild flowers or remembering the scent left on your skin after lying in the grass.  Nature therapy is nothing new, but the language we use to describe these practices are.  For centuries before our phones documented the minutiae of our lives in mere seconds, nature sketchbooks were used to record what we were seeing and feeling when out in nature. 

This workshop is an opportunity to slow down with nature, to observe, to reflect, to collect and record what we see - alongside our thoughts.  It’s not completely introspective, but rather an opportunity to look at the brilliance of the living world around us and find our place within it.”

Beginners are always very welcome; All materials needed to use in class are included in the course fee along with a take-home journal. 

Suitable for ages 18+.  Max. students 12.

About the tutor:

Dr Tabatha Forbes is a New Zealand Contemporary Botanical Artist who has been teaching Beginners Botanical Art and Nature Journaling for over 20 years.  Tabatha has a doctorate in Fine Arts and has studied and exhibited botanical art history in New Zealand and the South Pacific. She moved to Australia in 2024 to expand on her studies and develop her love of Australian flora and fauna.
