Family Green Time - Learn to Play in Nature
Event description
Swap the screen for the green and (re)-connect your family to the beautiful nature here in Centennial Park.
Join us for two hours of outdoor fun where your kids can build incredible cubbies, splash in the mud, track and catch critters, climb trees, play games and connect with other kids and families.
For parents and carers…
This is your chance to (re)learn all the adventurous things you used to do as a kid and then connect with your child through teaching and sharing those things with them.
…or … you might learn entirely new things together with your kids!
Why we run this program?
In our modern, urban, indoor world, children are losing once-innate life skills like climbing trees, building cubbies, catching lizards, identifying edible plants, inventing games and making up their own imaginary worlds. They are becoming bored because of a lack of creative, unstructured play in nature. Getting kids outside into active play in nature is one of the best things you can do for your children, to boost their health and wellbeing … and your own!
In Centennial Park, we believe in learning through play and exploration, encouraging curiosity and imagination.
Our outdoor classroom is an intentionally-designed natural learning and play space that includes a log circle, a climbing tree, a balancing log, painting rocks and plenty of loose parts for building stick shelters, making eco-art and learning bushcraft.
“I love how engaged and busy the kids are and how much of an emphasis there is on appreciating and being thankful to our surrounds.” - parent participant
This is the ideal workshop for all parents and carers who wish to get their children outside but aren’t quite sure how to negotiate the risks and make the most of a nature play experience . This is an action packed two hour session where we show you how to explore, take risks and be challenged in a natural learning environment.
