NCJWA NSW Shabbat Zachor 5783: Women in Persia/Iran, Then & Now
Event description
Shabbat Zachor is the Shabbat before Purim, the only Jewish holiday whose human protagonist is a woman. This is the reason it is traditionally marked in Australia as NCJWA's 'Council Shabbat'. We recall the courageous Esther, who as Queen of Shushan (which still exists in modern Iran as the town of Shush), acted with guile and grace within the confines of the Persian patriarchy to save her people. Women there in modern times have also needed guile and grace to overcome difficult circumstances, and we will hear from both Persian Jewish women and a young Iranian Zoroastrian woman about the challenges they faced and still face today. Join us for the service and/or for kiddush afterwards where these amazing women will tell their stories. There is no charge for this event, but donations are very welcome.
