Neck Pain Disorders & Treatment

Neck pain can be ranked as one of the most common disorders seen in musculoskeletal practice around the world.

Neck dysfunction is beginning to rival low back pain in its frequency and costs to society. It is estimated that cervical dysfunction will affect at least some 70% of the population.

The added burden of cervicogenic headaches in society has sparked a lot of interest in researchers as often this co-morbidity has a causative contribution from cervical and upper thoracic dysfunction.

This seminar will equip you with knowledge and a clinical understanding of the complex features and tissues involved in the genesis of neck pain and dysfunction. These are imperative for a positive outcome prior to any intervention treatment and further management.

This 2 day practical workshop will include

  • Surface and functional anatomy: Anatomy of the neck and shoulder girdle, including the biomechanics involved in load and movement.
  • History and clinical examination: This allows the clinician to assess the contribution of the nervous system shoulder girdle, articulations and cervical musculature that may be factors in neck pain disorders.
  • Posture and mechanical load: Altered loads in the cervical spine and cervicothoracic spine. How posture and inadequate capacity may affect and irritate pain sensitive structures.
  • The role of the neck in somatic headaches: What is the relationship between the neck and head pain.
  • Problem solving skills: We will be guided by our history and clinical assessment in targeting the appropriate muscles, with soft tissue and manual therapies for optimal outcomes in our patient population.
