Figure Drawing: Using Negative Space with Riley Woolworth

Class Description: Art+Design Labs is excited to offer these special new young adult workshops designed for high school students.This 1.5 hour workshop will focus on clothed figure drawing with charcoal as your medium. Challenge the traditional approach to observational drawing by using the subtractive drawing method, also known as highlight rendering!  In this exercise, students will cover their paper in charcoal and then use erasers to “carve out” the highlights, then shadows to create depth. Students will get two timed sessions to familiarize themselves with the concepts and one session to put those concepts into practice.

Eligibility: High school students who will have completed their freshman year through students who will have just completed their final year in high school are eligible.

Instructor: Riley Woolworth (rileyhaspowers) is an illustrator and self-proclaimed "ideas person." Riley graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2021 and creates traditional and digital illustrations as well as large-scale hand-painted murals. She works as a freelance illustrator, muralist, merch designer, and et cetera artist. Past clients and employers include: My Brother, My Brother and Me (podcast), Kansas City Art Institute, Gobbolabs, Heartbreak Coffee, The College Basketball Experience, KC Hopps, Midtown KC Now, and more. She is also a two-time Society of Illustrators award winner, among other things.

Supplies: All supplies and materials are included in the class fee and will be provided during the workshop.

Parking: Parking is available in any of the (NON-RESERVED) KCAI parking lot spaces across campus. RESERVED spaces are available after 5pm on the weekdays and all day on the weekends. There is also available street parking surrounding KCAI campus.
