Nerang BioBlitz: Butterfly Survey
Event description
We all know butterflies are beautiful but did you know that butterflies are also indicators of ecosystem health? Join Helen Schwencke for this two-hour butterfly and other unseen life survey in Nerang National Park. Helen's approach involves exploring and recording plant-insect interactions that is, getting " our eye in". This involves carefully looking for what eats what, often starting with known butterfly host plants. Having raised over 50 different species of butterflies in her backyard and, in total, 80+ from the bioregion, Helen has an eye for butterfly identification along with their eggs, larvae, pupae, and a deep knowledge of their ecology. You might even be lucky to glimpse South East Queensland’s largest butterfly and threatened species, the Richmond birdwing butterfly.
As well as connecting with nature and other like-minded people, your participation in this survey will help contribute to conservation research that is making a difference. Data collected will not only help scientists to better understand butterfly biodiversity, identify threatened species, and understand how well ecosystem are functioning. Attendees are encouraged to download the free iNaturalist app prior to the survey and join the Friends of Nerang National Park iNaturalist Project.
