Event description

Join the Friends of Parks team for a fun and informative glossy black-cockatoo walk and survey in Nerang National Park. These stunning, threatened birds feed exclusively on sheoak seeds, making the park one of their favourite hangouts. Ecologist Paul Revie will teach you how to spot the telltale signs of glossy feeding – chewings known as ‘orts’ scattered beneath their food trees – while we identify important feeding areas and favoured trees. Glossies are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, so with a bit of luck we might just spot some of these vulnerable yet majestic birds on this sunset survey.

As well as connecting with nature and other birders, your participation in this survey will help contribute to conservation research that is making a difference. Glossy black-cockatoos are a vulnerable species facing many threats. Data collected in this survey will help conservationists to locate essential food locations, inform threatened species management, and understand population health.

Attendees are encouraged to download the free iNaturalist app prior to the survey and join the Friends of Nerang National Park iNaturalist Project.

Please note, although the meeting place for this survey is Tom Rose Park, the actual survey will be a 5 minute drive away and will be disclosed at the meeting point on the day.

This event is proudly supported by a Community Sustainability Action Grant from the Queensland Government.
