"Breathing 101"
by Dee Marie

You do it about 20,000 times a day… and you are probably doing it wrong. In this talk, we will nerd out over the mechanics of breathing, explore the anatomy behind every inhale and exhale, and uncover how breath influences both body and brain. Expect interactive movement, laughter, and simple mindful breathing practices you can try in real time. You will leave with practical tools and mini meditations to add to your lifelong human toolkit.

Dee Marie, MA, CYT, holds a Master’s in Motor Development from New York University and is a certified health instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine. For over 40 years, she has taught yoga therapy, meditation, relaxation, and self-regulation to people of all ages and abilities through her business, Energy Source. She is also the creator of CALMING KIDS, a non-profit delivering mindfulness and yoga programmes to families, educators, and health providers since 2004.

"Something Soily"
by Hadee Thompson-Morrison

Soil is massively undervalued in NZ (did you know we throw around 800,000 tons of soil into landfill each year?? Even though most of this is absolutely fine to grow food in? Wild.), and the importance of these teeny tiny things called trace elements (think copper, zinc, lead, arsenic) that exist in the soil and can cause huge issues if we either have not enough or too many of them. They affect plant and crop health, animal health, human nutrition and mental health, greenhouse gas emissions, water quality, and countless environmental processes.

Hadee is a researcher in all things soil chemistry at the Bioeconomy Science Institute (formerly Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research) and likes to talk the ear off of anyone who will listen about the importance of soils. She's been studying soils since she realised pretty quickly into a social work degree that she gelled more with trees and piles of dirt than with people. Hadee's research aims to improve environmental outcomes through increasing our understanding of the hundreds of processes and reactions that take place, unseen, beneath our feet.
