Iris Berkeley

Radio is Dead, Long Live Radio

A radio station? In 2026? Who cares? Join Iris Berkeley, general manager of legendary CU Boulder student station Radio 1190, for a little bit about the station’s triumphant return to the Front Range airwaves and a bigger bit about how the “community” part of “community radio” is something we need more than ever these days.

Jay Mercury

Godzilla: The Natural Paradox

Is Godzilla is considered an endangered species or protected? I find that it really depends on which version of Godzilla it is, and also if you are using the Endangered Species Act (ESA) from the US or the Act on Conservation of Endangered Species (ACES) from Japan. Also, how that dictates how we would respond to a Kaiju showing up in our world today.

Joseph Labutka

Urban Drainage and the Magical HiFuLoMS!

How cities manage stormwater runoff has changed greatly over the decades. What once were concrete monstrosities and wasted space, we are transforming to natural streams and green corridors with the magic of HiFuLoMS! We’ll talk where the water goes, why your house does not (or does) flood, and how you can experience the magic too!

More fun tba!

afterparty -

Diebolt Brewing Company

Come hang with us after the show! We'll have free pizza to replenish all those calories your brain burned learning at Nerd Nite. Diebolt is just a five-minute walk (and an even shorter drive, with ample parking!) from the Bug. Not only do they have great beer, but they stay open late for us. Meet more of the Nerd Nite Denver community - we have just as much fun there as we do at the show!

Lineup

  • Iris Berkeley

    Iris Berkeley

Iris Berkeley got her start on the air at CU Boulder's predecessor to Radio 1190, KUCB, back in 1998 as an journalism student. After a 25-year career spanning music criticism, news editorial, marketing, multimedia production, and user experience, she returned to her first love as Radio 1190’s general manager in 2024. Iris continues to take to the airwaves on Radio 1190, Boulder’s KGNU-FM, and as producer of Modern Jetset, a weekly music discovery show airing on nearly 100 stations worldwide — plus playing records at home for her three extremely musically literate cats.

  • Joseph Labutka

    Joseph Labutka

Joey is a long time friend of Nerd Nite Denver and this is his first time presenting! He is a Water Resources Engineer who has worked on drainage infrastructure projects across Colorado. He has a love/hate relationship with Cherry Creek and beavers…He is a licensed professional engineer and recently retired from the Colorado Army National Guard. More importantly, he is a nerd, your friend, and a stream weirdo!

  • Jay Mercury

    Jay Mercury

I have been a fan of Godzilla since the year 2000 after watching the Godzilla (1998) movie on VHS, but really fell in love with the G-man after watching a 2002 PSA commercial. Since then I've introduced the uninitiated into the world of Godzilla from the movies, comics, and video games. I like to spend my time building Gundam Model kits, writing jokes for stand up, and commentating local fighting game tournaments. If I got to pick my communion, it would be Hot Cheetos and Whole Milk, no further questions.
