We all know that learning is more fun when you’re drinking with friends. Nerd Nite operates in over a hundred cities around the globe including our city - St. Pete! This lecture event strives for an inebriated, salacious, yet deeply academic vibe. Several presenters totally geek out for 20 minutes each while guests drink and socialize. It’s like Ted Talk– with beer! Drink, learn, connect, and talk about fun, interesting stuff!
Doors open at 6:30pm. Presentations begin promptly at 7pm.

Space Travel 101: For Those Who Want to Get the Hell Off This Planet
Need to jump 20 parsecs out to the Dagobah System? Wondering whether that wormhole in “Sector ENO” is up and working? Having issues with your plasma ion engine? Join Derek Demeter, astronomer and director of the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State College for an investigation on the latest findings in space travel as well as the reason it may only be a matter of time until such technologies become science fact instead of science fiction.
Derek began working at the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State College of Florida in 2003. In 2007, Mr. Demeter became the Planetarium Director and immediately began the process of writing and producing live/interactive shows for the Planetarium. Since then, his passion for teaching people about the wonders of the universe has earned him many accolades and worldwide recognition. Derek has served as president of the Southeastern Planetarium Association from 2016-2017 and is currently serving as the Executive-Secretary for the International Planetarium Society. Derek also enjoys promoting science beyond the Planetarium with his work as an astrophotographer, which his work has been featured in NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day, Astronomy Magazine, and other publications as well as art galleries. Derek is also a veteran Nerd Nite Orlando speaker and has given programs at various other Nerd Nite venues around the country. His talk this month is also featured in the book "How to Win Friends and Influence Fungi: Collected Quirks of Science, Tech, Math, and Engineering from Nerd Nite".

Martha Joy Rose will address the art of procreation in contemporary times addressing changing birth technologies, economic realities, and the science of m/otherhood with a special emphasis on feminism and its effects on American families.
Martha Joy Rose, BFA, MALS has a Master’s in Mother Studies. She is an award-winning artist and activist. Her pursuits have included academia, large-scale community gatherings and m/otherhood. She is the NOW-NYC recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award, her Mamapalooza Festival Series has been recognized as “Best in Girl-Power Events” (NYC) and her music has appeared on the Billboard Top 100 Dance Charts. She is the founder of the Museum of Motherhood here in St. Petersburg.
