Nerdscursion: Sustainable Living in Urban Florida
Description
We’re inviting our favorite Nerd Nite alumni to take their talks out into the wild! Nerdscursions are small, themed adventures led by former Nerd Nite speakers — a chance for curious locals to experience a topic hands-on.
In this nerdscursion, former speaker Laura Oldanie leads a tour of her urban homestead.
Tucked away in Gulfport, two neighboring households have joined forces to create something quietly revolutionary: a shared urban homestead that feels part fairy tale, part climate-resilience lab.
This living experiment is bursting with freshly grown food, medicinal herbs, buzzing beehives, backyard chickens, and a whole lot of “wait, you can do that?” energy. It’s all designed to build a more sustainable, resilient, and joyful way of living—the kind that helps humans weather climate change, economic uncertainty, and the occasional existential spiral.
On this Nerdscursion, you’ll:
Tour the property and see how two homes became one thriving ecosystem
Sip herbal teas grown on site (yes, that plant right there)
Talk systems, sustainability, and community resilience
Ask all your burning questions (chickens included)
You’ll leave inspired, empowered, and maybe plotting your own backyard revolution—right here in Tampa Bay.
Bring: a notebook, curious questions, and comfy outdoor clothes.
Leave with: ideas, optimism, and a renewed belief that the future might actually be pretty cool.
