Nerikomi Workshop 23/10/26

Nerikomi is a beautiful technique for creating bold, marbled patterns within the clay itself. Instead of decorating the surface, a pattern is made through layering and manipulating the clay which runs through the whole piece, meaning each piece comes out completely unique.

This workshop is designed for all skill levels. It’s perfect if you’re a total beginner wanting a gentle introduction to this style of making with clay, or if you’re an experienced ceramicist keen to add a new technique to your toolkit. The process is easy to follow, highly adaptable, and encourages experimentation, you can keep your patterns simple and graphic, or build something more detailed and complex.

Although the word nerikomi comes from Japan, where the technique was refined and popularised in the 70's, marbled clay traditions go back much further. Similar approaches can be traced through China as far back as the 620 CE and also England’s 'agate-ware' from the 80's.

Two pieces are included in the cost of the workshop, which will be fired and glazed for you to collect 4-5 weeks after the workshop. More pieces can be made on the evening if there is time with an additional fee of $20 per piece.

This workshop is for ages 16+ (alcohol will be present, so any minors must be accompanied by a paying adult).

Physical Accessibility: There is a level access via roller door. The main door, rear door and bathroom doorways are 820mm wide, The bathroom is accessible via two steps. There is an accessible toilet 140m away on Lobb Street at Yubuk Park. Please get in touch if you require more information.

While every care is taken to ensure the success of your pieces, clay is an unpredictable natural material and, on occasion, cracking or breakage may occur during drying or firing. By participating, you acknowledge and accept this possibility.
